You did it! After years of late nights, early mornings, and more coffee than anyone should reasonably consume, you've made it to graduation. And while the ceremony itself is a blur of names being called and mortarboards being tossed, your graduation portraits? Those are forever.

Boston in late spring is genuinely magical. From mid-April through June, the city blooms in ways that feel almost unfair. Cherry blossoms pop along the Esplanade, tulips line the paths of the Public Garden, and the trees on Commonwealth Avenue form lush green canopies that make every shot feel cinematic.
This is exactly why booking early matters. Late April and May book up fast for graduation photographers in Boston, not just because of volume, but because the light and foliage are at their absolute peak. Golden hour in Boston during May falls around 6:30–7:30 PM, giving us a long, warm window of that buttery, flattering light that makes portraits glow.
If you're a May or June grad, aim to schedule your session in late April or the first two weeks of May. You'll get the blooms without the heat, and you'll beat the rush.
The Best Locations for Graduation Photos in Boston
Part of what makes Boston so special for graduation portraits is the sheer variety of backdrops within a short distance of each other. Here are some of my favorites:
Boston Public Garden is the crown jewel. The weeping willows, swan boats, bridge, and flower beds give you soft, romantic, natural imagery that never goes out of style. It photographs beautifully at sunrise and golden hour.
The Esplanade along the Charles River offers sweeping waterfront views with the Cambridge skyline in the background. It's especially stunning in early morning before foot traffic picks up.
Copley Square and the Boston Public Library bring in architectural grandeur, arched entryways, stone facades, and that stunning courtyard inside the BPL that feels like stepping into Europe.
Harvard Yard and Harvard Square are iconic for a reason. Whether you're a Harvard student or not, the red brick, ivy, and historic gates create a timeless academic aesthetic that reads "I worked hard and it paid off."
Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain is one of Boston's best-kept secrets for photographers. 280 acres of specimen trees and flowering shrubs, and in late April and May, it is genuinely breathtaking. Lilac Weekend alone is worth planning a session around.
Commonwealth Avenue Mall gives you tree-lined elegance in the heart of the Back Bay, lush overhead coverage, wide paths, and classic Boston brownstones in the background.

What to Wear for Your Graduation Session
This is one of the questions I get most, and the honest answer is: wear something that makes you feel like the best version of yourself.
That said, here are a few practical tips:
Solid colors and simple patterns photograph best. Busy prints and logos can distract the eye from your face, which is the point of the whole thing. Jewel tones, deep blues, burgundy, forest green, or rust, look stunning against Boston's green parks and warm brick architecture.
Think about the season. Late April and May in Boston can range from 55°F to 75°F. Layering is smart, a blazer or light jacket you can take on and off gives you variety in a single session.
Bring your cap and gown if you want it. Some grads love having a few shots in regalia; others skip it entirely. There's no wrong answer. What I'd suggest: wear something you love underneath so we can capture you in both looks.
Don't forget shoes. We will be walking, and some locations have uneven paths. Choose footwear you can actually move in, heels are fine for certain spots, but bring flats as backup.
