Spring in Boston is fleeting — and that's exactly what makes it so magical. The cherry blossoms don't wait, the light doesn't last, and before you know it, another season has slipped by without photos to remember it. That's why I offer spring mini sessions every year, and why for 2026 I chose two of Boston's most stunning locations: Piers Park in East Boston and the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain.
If you've been thinking about booking a session this spring, here's everything you need to know.
What Is a Spring Mini Session?
A spring mini session is a shorter, more affordable version of a full photography session typically 20–30 minutes, designed to capture your family, your little ones, or your growing bump in the beauty of the season. Mini sessions are perfect if you're looking for updated photos without the full commitment of a longer shoot, or if you just want something beautiful and meaningful to mark this season of life.
At Annick Studio Photography, spring minis are intentional, unhurried, and personal. I don't rush families through an assembly line. Each session gets my full attention, and every gallery is hand-edited with care.
Location 1: Piers Park, East Boston
Piers Park is one of Boston's most underrated photography gems. Sitting right along the harbor with sweeping views of the city skyline and the water, it offers a backdrop that feels both intimate and cinematic.
Why I love it for spring sessions:
- The waterfront light especially in the late afternoon — is soft, golden, and absolutely gorgeous
- The skyline views create a uniquely Boston feel that you can't get anywhere else
- It's relaxed and spacious, which is great for families with little ones who need room to run
- The East Boston community vibe makes it feel authentic, not touristy
Best for: Families, couples, maternity sessions, toddlers and young kids
Parking: Street parking is available on Marginal Street and nearby side streets. The park is also accessible via the MBTA Blue Line (Maverick Station).
What to wear: Soft, neutral tones work beautifully against the waterfront backdrop. Dusty blues, creams, sage greens, and warm taupes photograph especially well with the water and sky. Avoid busy patterns or overly bright colors that compete with the scenery.
Location 2: Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain
If Piers Park is Boston's hidden gem, the Arnold Arboretum is its crown jewel for spring photography. This 281-acre Harvard-managed preserve is one of the most beautiful places in the city — and in spring, it's simply breathtaking.
Cherry trees, magnolias, dogwoods, and lilacs bloom in waves throughout April and May, creating a rotating backdrop of color and texture that feels like something out of a fairy tale. By early May, the Arboretum is in full bloom, with cherry blossoms giving way to lilacs, and all of it is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk.
Why I love it for spring sessions:
- The variety of blooms means no two sessions look exactly alike
- Winding paths, open hills, and canopies of blossoms give us so many options within a single location
- It's a beloved Boston landmark, so your photos will always feel rooted in this city and this season
- The scale of the space means we can find pockets of quiet even on busy weekends
Best for: Families, newborns (fresh 48 or outdoor newborn), maternity, siblings, couples.
Parking: Free parking is available along the Arborway. You can also take the MBTA Orange Line to Forest Hills and walk in through the Arboretum Gate.
What to wear: Neutrals, florals, soft pastels, and earthy tones thrive here. Think blush pink, cream, sage, mauve, or soft yellow. The blooms provide so much color already your outfits should complement, not compete.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book? As soon as possible. Spring sessions sell out every year, and peak bloom windows at the Arboretum are especially short. If you're hoping for blossom-filled photos, don't wait.
What if it rains? I monitor the forecast closely and will reach out in advance if weather is a concern. We can reschedule for another available date.
Can I bring my dog? Dogs are welcome at Piers Park! Please note that dogs must be leashed at the Arnold Arboretum.
How do I receive my photos? Your gallery will be delivered online within the timeframe outlined in your contract. You'll be able to download, share, and order prints directly from your private gallery.
I've never done a professional photo session before — is that okay? Absolutely. I guide every family through the session so it feels natural and relaxed. The best photos happen when you're just being yourselves, I handle the rest.
